Average Interview – Overall Negative Experience – No – Fri, 25 Sep 2015

Interviewed Sep 2015 in New York, NY(took 14 days)
I applied online and a little over a week later received an email that I was being invited to a hiring event. I confirmed my appointment and waited for the day. At the hiring event there were 3 Apple hiring reps and about 20 other applicants divided amongst 4 tables. These were now our "groups" for the event. While we were waiting for the event to begin we filled out the general form they left for us on the table with what locations and positions we were interested in and our availability. Once started, we went through a brief introduction where each person stood up and answered the question "Name one example of when you went above what a customer expected of you to help them". After that we watched a very short video on working at apple. This video is also up on their website. We then proceeded to turn to our group members and start passing around an iPad to answer some general questions (ex. Why apple?) After that activity we moved on to a role playing exercise acting out whatever situation came up on the iPad. AND THAT WAS IT. The main speaker/ hiring rep simply told us thank you for coming and that they would be getting in touch with us within 10 days. To my surprise, I received an email the next day stating I was not selected to move on to the second interview. This really was NOT much of an interview. One hiring rep standing behind all the tables was trying to "secretly" record everyone while we were answering our first question and introducing ourselves. Then during our role playing activity the 3 reps rotated across the four tables listening to our responses, staying at each table for no more than a minute or so. Everything was extremely rushed and there was no real interaction between us and the reps. 98% of the time the reps stood off to the back and just talked amongst themselves. Like most im really not sure what they were looking for during this "interview". My only idea for why I was not selected was that I didnt have any retail experience where the others at my table had quite a lot. But if thats the case and they are not interested in anyone without even minimum retail experience they should not have waited my time with coming in at all. Another note, I believe that everyones tables were pre selected. When you first came in they would ask you your name and direct you to a specific table. My table had 4 people with a few seats left for more, however the table next to us was crammed with about 7 people. I wonder if they were placing us in specific locations according to our resumes? Overall a strange experience and kinda boring. Wish they would just do it the old fashioned way and do a regular one on one off the bat.
