Difficult Interview – Overall Positive Experience – Yes, and I accepted – Wed, 1 Nov 2017
Interviewed Oct 2,017 in Salt Lake City, UT (took 28 days)
1. I went into the Apple Store a couple of times to get my phone fixed. I ended up having a conversation with one of the tech guys and I asked him how hard it was to get in. He said that it was pretty difficult but he felt like I would be a good fit. He recommended me. Keep in mind that I had applied a year before this and had no calls or invitations. With in a few days after his recommendation I got an email being invited to a hiring event.
2. The hiring event was fun. If you have ever been to a launch day it was much like this. Loud music playing, all the employees clapping, etc. There were about 30 of us and for about an hour we went over what Apple was. Then we separated into groups of 6 and went to 4 different stations. 3 of the stations had managers at them that would pass around an ipad and you would be able to choose your questions that you want to answer. It was more of a discussion than anything. The last stage was in a conference room and it was still a group setting but the managers did most of the asking in this phase. They closed with a thank you and said if you don't get in to keep trying.
3. After a couple days I got an invitation for an interview. I showed up at the assigned time and it was another group interview but this time there were 4 of us. It was essentially the same as the hiring event. We all 4 sat across from 2 managers and they asked us questions and told us they would get back to us with a decision.
5. This was somewhat of an awkward phase because I got some emails that said "Congrats on moving to the offer phase" and then a request for a background check but to this point I still hadn't heard back if I had the position. Eventually a couple days later I was welcomed to the team and informed my start date, position, pay, etc.
Overall it was a very difficult process. Apple prides itself with finding the best people therefore they don't just hire someone that has technical experience. They want people that can interact with people, be compassionate, and understanding of peoples problems. The company can train you on the technical aspect but they can't train you on people skills. Also, they want people that show grit and have the ability to do their work well but also make Apple a better place even if that means challenging the status quo.
